Condition and risk surveys for insurance

When an insurer asks for a survey of your boat, we inspect its condition and risk items within an agreed scope and provide written findings for you to pass on.

Start with your insurer

Check the requirements before we set the scope

Every insurer has its own requirements. Before booking, ask your insurer or broker exactly what they need and send it through with your enquiry, so the survey covers the right things.

We can't promise that any particular insurer will accept a survey. That decision rests with the insurer.

Typical scope

What an insurance condition survey usually looks at

Final scope depends on your insurer's requirements, access and the vessel.

    Where there is safe access

  • 02

    Props, shafts, skegs and rudders

  • 03

    Anodes

    Condition and wear

  • 04

    Skin fittings & seacocks

    Visible fittings and operation

  • 05

    Deck fittings

    Hardware, rails and fixtures

  • 06

    General mechanical

    Visual and operational check

  • 07

    Electronics & batteries

    Incl. battery terminal connections

  • 08

    Safety equipment

    EPIRB, VHF, flares, lifejackets, extinguishers

  • 09

    Anchoring gear

  • 10

    Trailer

    For trailer boats

  • 11

    Overall condition

    General observations

Optional, when requested and arranged

  • Compression tests on petrol motors
  • Engine oil samples
  • Targeted moisture readings in areas of concern

Scope is agreed before each survey and depends on access, vessel type and conditions on the day. Not every survey includes every item or test.

Limitations

Transparent about what a survey can and can't do

A survey records the visible and accessible condition of the vessel at the time of inspection, within the agreed scope. It does not involve dismantling, cannot assess hidden or inaccessible areas, and is not a warranty or guarantee of seaworthiness. Acceptance of the survey and any cover decisions are made by your insurer.

Process

How it works

  1. Step 1

    Enquire

Send the vessel details or listing link, its location and what you need. We confirm scope, timing and a quote.

  2. Step 2

    Inspection

Paul inspects the vessel on site at the agreed time, in or out of the water depending on the arrangement and access.

  3. Step 3

    Written findings

You receive written findings covering what was inspected, observations and items worth attention.
